Super Coffees and Other Drinks that Are Good For You

There are thousands of ready-to-drink coffees that are supposed to boost your energy levels. Instead of them, I wanted to dive into the freshly made drinks and find out, what kind of choices does a trendy coffee shop customer have nowadays.

Coffee – to use or not to use?

It has been popular for some years now to use certain natural ingredients with the reputation having a high level of protein, vitamins, flavonoids, antioxidants etc. Also, these drinks seem to be served mostly with vegan milk.

In case any sweeteners are used, they are brown sugar in some form, syrup, honey, stevia or other ingredients with naturally sweet in taste.

There are two main types of these drinks. Both of them can be served hot and cold.
1.    Coffee and milk with some special ingredient(s)
2.   Milk with some special ingredient(s)

Of course we in Paulig Barista Institute are highly interested in the versions with coffee. However the customer behavior is highly defined by the trends so we need to see there is a group of people who want to go to a coffee shop but not necessarily for a cup pf coffee.

Coffee based super drinks

To create a super coffee drink, it is very common to combine coffee with some kind of oil or butter. The oil is usually MCT or other coconut oil and the butter is usually ghee.

Here is my favorite – simple and smooth and easy to prepare at home, too:

  • 2 dl freshly brewed filter coffee
  • 1 tbsp MCT oil
  • 1 tbsp ghee

Measure all the ingredients into a blender and blend until fluffy.

Another, a bit more complex super coffee drink that I like is this:

  1. Pull a double espresso into a small pitcher.
  2. Steam 3 dl of oat milk.
  3. Mix half of the milk in a blender with 1 tbsp of raw cocoa, 1 tsp of maca powder, 2 tbsp of coconut sugar and a pinch of salt.
  4. Pour the rest of the milk into a big cup, add the mixture and the espresso.

Also cold brew coffee is feasible in this case! Try this out:

  • Fill a large glass with ice cubes.
  • Pull a double espresso into a small pitcher.
  • Mix 3 dl cold milk, 1 tsp Maca powder and 1,5 tbsp coconut sugar in a blender.
  • Pour the water out of the glass, then add the mixture and coffee.

Milk based super drinks

For the milk drinks with no coffee, there is usually a spice paste or a dry spice mix as a base. Make sure you use high quality products!

Some of the most common ingredients are:

  • Matcha – the evergreen
  • Turmeric – the orange splash
  • Chai – the oriental warmth
  • Lucuma – the creamy darling
  • Maca – the malty maniac
  • Moringa – the trendy miracle
  • Beetroot – the pink sweetie
  • Spirulina – the seaweed surprise

These can also be served cold!

And if you want to boost these with MCT oil or something else – go ahead!

Did you get inspired? Try out Moringa Latte!

  • Make a spice paste out of 0,5 tsp Moringa powder, 0,5 tsp powdered cardamom and 1 tbsp maple syrup.
  • Steam oat milk for two lattes.
  • Add the paste into the cups and fill the cups with steamed milk.

And there is more!

If you want to have everything in one cup, you should definitely go for 5AM Coffee:

  • Prepare one shot of espresso.
  • Mix 3 dl hot water, 1 tsp Lucuma powder, 1 tsp Maca powder, two pinches of Cayenne powder, 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp MCT oil and 1 tsp churn butter in a blender.
  • Pour the mixture into a latte cup and add the espresso on top.

And if you are to boost your coffee with – coffee….It is the Red Eye! A drink with one shot of espresso added to a cup of regular filter coffee or cold brew.
